Tips for your visit to the museum

The museum in Kommern is one of the largest open-air museums in Europe. So plan enough time to be able to see the historical buildings; an overview needs at least two hours, an additional hour is necessary to take in an exhibition as well.

You will find well-explained information on notice-boards around the museum grounds. We recommend consulting the 'Info-point' of a group of buildings before walking around it. The historical living conditions and economic situation of the respective region are described, enabling visitors to better understand what the group of buildings represents.

The Open-Air Museum is a museum about people. Their lives and work are at the centre of things. The people in the museum - farmer, lathe-turner, smith, weaver - have been trained to explain their traditional work and its historical background.

The Museum is open every day of the year! Most visitors come on Sundays, but Mondays and Fridays are relatively quiet. Please be sure to wear clothes suitable for the weather. Wearing shoes with high heels is not a good idea.

You will encounter things to photograph and record on video all over the museum, and you are welcome to do so, provided that photos and videotapes are for private and not commercial purposes. Please understand that we cannot permit any photography or recording with artificial light, including flash, as this can have a bleaching effect on objects.

Incidentally, your dog is very welcome in our museum grounds. However, it must be on a leash, according to by-law regulations, and is not allowed inside the buildings!
